Compare two labelled list versions with AI

Use Claude to draft a checklist that compares an earlier labelled list with a later version. Keep exact source text, classify unique labels, and send malformed or conflicting entries to human review.

Paste the two source lists

Open Claude at https://claude.ai/ and start a chat. Remove personal, confidential or otherwise sensitive data unless you are authorized to use it and the current data controls meet your needs. Label the earlier baseline as Source A and the later version as Source B. Use this fictional source to practise the method: ```text Source A — earlier baseline OPS-101 | Open doors at 08:30. OPS-102 | Test the alarm at 09:00. OPS-103 | Put signs by the east entrance. OPS-104 | Call the desk at 16:45. OPS-105 | Pack 12 blue folders. OPS-105 | Pack 10 blue folders. Check spare keys. OPS-107 Source B — later version OPS-101 | Open doors at 08:30. OPS-102 | Test the alarm at 09:15. OPS-104 | Call the desk at 16:45. OPS-105 | Pack 12 blue folders. OPS-106 | Place cones by the west entrance. ??? | Lock side gate at 18:00. OPS-108 | Email the report. ``` Treat each line below a source heading as one source item. For your own comparison, replace the fictional lines while keeping the Source A and Source B headings.

  2. Ask for an exact-label comparison

After both source blocks, paste this instruction: ```text Compare Source A, the earlier baseline, with Source B, the later version. Match items only when they have the same usable label. Create these sections: 1. Unchanged: the label appears once in each source and its text is identical. Preserve the exact label and text. 2. Changed: the label appears once in each source but its text differs. Show the exact Source A text and exact Source B text. 3. Removed: the label appears only in Source A. Preserve its exact Source A text. 4. Added: the label appears only in Source B. Preserve its exact Source B text. 5. Questions: include raw entries with no usable label, entries that cannot be parsed, and duplicate or conflicting labels. State what a person needs to resolve without guessing. Account for every source item. Preserve exact wording, punctuation and supplied times. Do not describe a label found only in one source as missing: it is removed if only in Source A and added if only in Source B. Do not infer reasons, dates, owners, approvals, benefits or any other missing facts. If something cannot be determined from the input, keep it in Questions. Finish with a short checklist for a person to compare the draft against both sources before sharing it. ```

  3. Compare the draft with the worked result

For the fictional input, a manually checked target result is: ```text Unchanged - OPS-101 | Open doors at 08:30. - OPS-104 | Call the desk at 16:45. Changed - OPS-102 - Source A: Test the alarm at 09:00. - Source B: Test the alarm at 09:15. Removed - OPS-103 | Put signs by the east entrance. Added - OPS-106 | Place cones by the west entrance. - OPS-108 | Email the report. Questions - Duplicate or conflicting label OPS-105: - Source A raw: OPS-105 | Pack 12 blue folders. - Source A raw: OPS-105 | Pack 10 blue folders. - Source B raw: OPS-105 | Pack 12 blue folders. - A person must confirm which Source A entry is valid or whether the labels should differ before assigning a status. - Source A raw: Check spare keys. - A person must supply a usable label before it can be matched. - Source A raw: OPS-107 - A person must confirm the intended text because the entry cannot be parsed as a label-and-text item. - Source B raw: ??? | Lock side gate at 18:00. - A person must supply or confirm a usable label before it can be matched. Human check before sharing - Compare every output line with Source A and Source B. - Confirm that all 15 raw source items are represented. - Confirm that exact wording, punctuation and times are preserved. - Resolve every item in Questions without guessing. ``` Incorrect example: ```text Missing: OPS-103 ``` Correct example: ```text Removed: OPS-103 | Put signs by the east entrance. ``` OPS-103 is Removed because it appears only in the earlier Source A.

  4. Check every classification

For the fictional source, verify these points against the raw lines: - All eight Source A items and all seven Source B items are represented. - OPS-101 and OPS-104 are Unchanged because each appears once in both sources with identical text. - OPS-102 is Changed, and both supplied times remain exact. - OPS-103 is Removed; OPS-106 and OPS-108 are Added. - Every OPS-105 entry stays in Questions because Source A contains conflicting duplicates. - `Check spare keys.`, `OPS-107` and `??? | Lock side gate at 18:00.` stay in Questions because they lack a usable label or complete parseable text. - No reason, date, owner, approval, benefit or other absent fact has been added. For your own lists, repeat the same line-by-line check. Correct the draft directly if the assistant changes source wording or assigns an ambiguous item a status.

  5. Save the reviewed checklist

After a person has compared the checklist with both sources, copy it into your document or save it in your approved format. Reuse the method by replacing only the Source A and Source B blocks while keeping the comparison rules. To start another draft, use the existing Claude link: https://claude.ai/.
