Use ChatGPT as a maths tutor

Use ChatGPT Study for one hint, let the learner retry, then check the reasoning with a worked perimeter example.

Set up a conversation that waits

This is a one-hint-at-a-time practice, not a race to the answer. Use an eligible ChatGPT account and follow the learner’s school and account rules. On the web, open a regular conversation, type @study and select Study from the suggestions; OpenAI also documents chatgpt.com/studymode. Study is not available in Temporary Chats, GPTs or Projects. If it is unavailable, you can do this worksheet with a person. Keep names, school details and private records out of the chat. When you return, record the hint and the learner’s retry before opening the worked key.

  2. Keep the original question and each written line

Fictional practice, not a learner record. Q: A rectangle has perimeter 30 cm and width 5 cm. Find its length L. W1: 2(L + 5) = 30 W2: L + 5 = 30 W3: L = 25 cm The learner says: “I removed the 2. I do not know what to do with the 30.” Goal: explain the move from W1 to W2, then let the learner try again. Unknown: whether this is a one-off slip or a wider difficulty. Do not infer that from one example.

  3. Ask for the first hint, then stop

Help with the question and written attempt below. Use only the supplied information. Check the mathematics privately, but do not reveal the final answer or a full solution in your first reply. Quote the first step that does not follow, then ask one short guiding question about that step. Stop and wait for the learner’s retry. Do not label the learner’s ability or invent their age, history or feelings. After a retry, check the new line before giving another hint. If the problem is incomplete or unclear, ask for the missing detail rather than filling it in.

  4. Write the hint and the retry before opening the key

Try first: record the first question you received or wrote, the learner’s new line, and what you would ask next. You can write this manually; no ChatGPT reply is required. Authored key for this fictional source — not a recorded ChatGPT answer: W1 correctly models the perimeter. W2 is the first invalid move: dividing the left side by 2 also requires dividing the right side by 2. One useful first question: “If we divide the left side by 2, what must happen to the right side?” Then wait. A correct retry is L + 5 = 15, followed by L = 10 cm. Check: 2(10 + 5) = 30 cm. The original L = 25 would give 2(25 + 5) = 60 cm, so it cannot fit the question. If the retry is L + 5 = 15 but the learner stops, ask which operation undoes adding 5. If ChatGPT reveals the answer immediately, ask it to stop solving and use the follow-up problem without showing its key. A request for hints is not a guarantee that the tool will wait.

  5. Check the reasoning, not just the number

Before ticking the review checks, confirm that your notes identify W2, explain doing the same operation to both sides, preserve cm, and substitute 10 into the original perimeter equation. Keep the learner’s retry separate from the hint you supplied. A correct number copied from the key does not show that the learner can repeat the method. If the tool disagrees with the substitution, trust the checked arithmetic and ask a teacher or another person to review the explanation.

  6. Try a new rectangle before calling it learned

Give this follow-up without the key: “A rectangle has perimeter 34 cm and width 6 cm. Find its length and check it in the perimeter formula.” Ask the learner to show each line. Adult key: 2(L + 6) = 34; L + 6 = 17; L = 11 cm; 2(11 + 6) = 34 cm. If the same move is wrong again, return to the first hint rather than adding harder numbers. If the learner solves and checks it independently, use the Similar practice Task below to prepare another problem at the same level. Record “needed one hint” or “checked independently”; do not turn one retry into a mastery score. Copy the worksheet before leaving.
