AI solutions for middle school maths
AI helps a lot with explaining mistakes, locating the gap and generating similar questions — provided it is used well. The point is not to throw a question at AI for the answer, but to let AI guide the child to think it through. Below is the task list we researched and the first validated solution.
The right and wrong ways to use AI
This is the most important part of the page — used well, AI helps a child learn better rather than think less.
- Have AI ask questions and guide the thinking first, then give hints step by step
- Ask AI to explain step by step, pausing at each step for the child to work it out
- Afterwards, ask AI which step the mistake was in and why
- Reinforce with similar questions rather than checking a single answer
- A parent or student regularly checks whether AI's explanation is correct
- Throwing the question at AI and taking only the final answer
- Letting AI do the homework or the exam
- Not checking AI's working for mistakes
- Doing it once and stopping, with no reinforcement
- Treating AI as the only teacher and skipping class entirely

Anchor task: coach a child through a maths mistake
The first task we are validating. The whole flow is built around guided thinking, so AI does not hand over the answer.
Enter the wrong answer → AI guides the explanation (no direct answer) → diagnose the mistake → similar practice → parent/student check
Photograph or type the question the child got wrong. Instead of giving the answer, AI guides them through it with questions, helps them find which step and why they went wrong, then gives similar questions to reinforce. A parent or student checks the explanation afterwards.
Feedback from students, parents and teachers
This task has only just entered validation, so there is no real feedback sample yet.
No student, parent or teacher has yet reported back on coaching a maths mistake with AI. Finish the task once and you can be the first, saving other families the detour.
